YOO EVERYONE - ADAM HERE.
101 DAYS IN PERMADREAM.
What does this expression mean? Do even I know?
This is what is written on the very top of my whiteboard, which also doubles as my philosophical board.. as it is mixed with dates and expressions designed to help steer me back towards my path that I’m forging for myself in life.
Every morning I wake up and add another day to my count-up.
I’ve found myself previously driven and inspired by countdowns of all sorts. As symbolically I like what a countdown represents.
The idea that with each day - comes great progress towards our eventual goal. Yet, at times a countdown can be more stressful, as the chase really begins when you reach single digits (in days remaining). That feeling of OH GAWD I only have 7 days left, and I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything.
But what about with a countup? Well, that’s my current experiment.
Here I’ll share my main criteria. Give your countup a name first and foremost.
For me naturally, I chose PERMADREAM, as not only is the name of my latest album, but symbolically I like what it represents. As I’m continually fascinated by the world of dreams, especially in psychological terms. Is there a way to pair what we learn from our dreams into our actual lives - shaping our realities more in tune with what our unconscious desires?
These are the sorts of questions I’ve been exploring.
Where will 1,000 days lead me?
1,000 DAYS
One experiment with time I intend to work on is seeing how my perception of time alters when tracking time in 1,000 days, rather than focusing on years, months/ what day of the week it is.
Each day when repeated with the same sort of routine (NO MATTER WHAT) the context is, is also a big part of this journey.
Systematically, I’ve been working on perfecting my “self-care routine” and find that the more days, as well as times I tend to these things - the better I feel about myself and the reality I am swimming in.
This consists of: reading, writing, exercise, meditation, manifesting and creating. These 6 activities are the activities I placed on my faux health insurance card for my very first album if you don’t recall.
What sort of life will 1,000 days make as I continue to practice the above mentioned prescription on a daily basis?
I’m 101 days in and I’m liking what I’m experiencing so far :)
BOOKS.
I’ll start with the books I just finished reading this week..
“Confessions” by St. Augustine and “Psychological Types” by Carl Jung. Books #304 and Books #305 of my Journey to reading 1,000 books.
I’ve found especially this year, that my pace of reading books, as well as overall approach has altered. One thing, I’d like to allow for is less rigidity in terms of what books I am assigning myself to read next. As I think a very pivotal key to sustaining lifelong interest in learning consists in you continually reinventing your approach to keep the flame going.
Next up, I plan on reading more world-renowned psychologists as I really cannot get enough of the stuff as of late.
Abraham Maslow’s “Toward a Psychology of Being. William James’s “Varieties of Religious Experiences”
And at last, finishing Sigmund Freud’s “Interpretation of Dreams” which I have been struggling getting through. It is safe to say, I see myself as more of a Jungian fan than Freud. Perhaps in a future newsletter I can detail why this is.
DJING
Are you going to be in Detroit in September at all? If so here’s my DJING schedule at the spot in which I hold my DJ Residency, Hanah Detroit.
Friday, September 8th. Saturday, September 9th.
Friday, September 15th.
Friday, September 22nd. Saturday, September 23rd.
Friday, September 29th.
All of these nights I’ll be DJING from 7 until Midnight! Come by to hear what I’ve been working on musically as of late. 5-10 HOURS worth of bangers every weekend requires a lot of new music discovery!
Also, if you are ever looking for a DJ for any future events let me know @ibartydarty.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST.
Counting up (in days) encourages you to focus on the progress you've made in life rather than dwelling on what's left to achieve in that given day.
Ask yourself the question where will 1,000 days lead you?
Cheers to lifelong learning,
Adam Bartley
This is a really cool idea. There’s a common saying that “people overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in 10 years” and I feel like 1,000 days provides a timeline that address that.
