Hey Everyone - Adam here.
Let us start with a quote - shall we?
"The coincidence of idea and reality in the form of a special psychic state, a state of grace, should not be deemed impossible."
This sounds just like the idea I wanted to establish with the idea of PERMADREAM.
Today... June 18th marks 26 DAYS IN PERMADREAM.
I have decided I am going to experiment with the idea of a count-up rather than perpetually having a countdown that guides my life.
To preface, I set quite the countdown in the first place to establish a date that I wanted to release a project.. inspired by a song I had just created called PERMADREAM.
PERMADREAM ended up as the title of my first album as BARTYDARTY. (Did you check it out yet?)
So now, I have decided I want to count the amount of days UP that I am immersed in what I am calling PERMADREAM to 1,000 days.
Where will 1,000 days in PERMADREAM lead me? Where will reading 1,000 books lead me? What do either of these pursuits even mean?
The key with my journey to 1,000 is in approaching each day one at a time, or even better interpreting my perception of time throughout a day by experiencing one song at a time. Or better yet, living life one page at a time.
READING.
I’m planning on reading a lot this summer.
I have just finished reading two books in which my favorite thinker of this year… Carl Jung wrote.
“The Secret of The Golden Flower” where he plays a smaller role in providing a commentary on a translation of an ancient chinese text inspired by a lot of the ideas from the “I Ching”.
As well as “Psyche and Symbol” which is a collection of various essays Jung wrote in his career as a psychoanalyst. This book touches on a lot of his psychological insights such as the self, the unconscious, dream interpretation, the anima/animus, introversion/extroversion as well as one of my favorite recent discoveries “the wise old man motif” which frequenttly appeared in Jung’s patients’ dreams.
The part that is exciting about these two books, is it brings me closer and closer to reaching 300 books total that I have read in full in the last 5-6 years.
Almost 30% complete on my Journey to 1,000. And I swear with each book read, each page read, I develop a greater appreciation for the written word.
I am psyched for the summer, as I’ll have much more time to dig into deeper, more dense texts that I was unable to during the school year, as teaching took up a decent amount of my time.
I created this Psychology Reading Challenge a while back, where I assigned myself 10 reads on the field of Psychology which I continue to cultivate a passion for. The initial due date I set was for myself to complete these before the end of the summer. You can bet, that the next books I’ll be reading are going to be from this list. Perhaps I can share some of the lessons learned this summer?
With the start of the summer being here, I am now pivoting back to being a student again, as I am also enrolled in a summer school program devoted to reading classical texts with an interesting experiment in online education called Trivium University.
This week alone, we are tasked with reading selections from some of society’s first true philosophers speaking on the soul as well as the human mind. We are reading and discussing the ideas of thinkers such as Aristotle and Plato.
Let me tell you - this is by no means any light reading. The language in which they communicate with comes from a time very unlike our present one. And yet, when one can successfully navigate their strange wording, you can actually find deep resonance in what it is they are communicating.
There is a reason ancient thinkers like Aristotle and Plato are still referred to. Let us not forget this.
MUSIC MAKING.
Bonobo is 47.
I am 27.
We have a twenty year difference in age.
I bet Bonobo was making music as a 27 year old. Which led him to the point where I witness him performing on Memorial Day in Downtown Detroit for Movement.
Whenever I witness or see any live performance of music I enjoy, I often find myself looking up the age of the performers. Are they older or younger than me? If so by how many years? Am I too late or am I too early to pursue music?
I’m learning to speak my poetry.
I’m already excited to share the next album, which from here on out… will be dropped on May 23rd… every year moving forward.
I’ll drop an album on May 23rd every year until someone in my family is ready to take over this commitment.
1,000 DAYS. 1,000 BOOKS. 1,000 SONGS.
1,000 of anything, and I bet you’ll have a much greater appreciation of it.
Set absurd goals and strive towards them.
How fundamentally different would my music sound if I made 1,000 songs?
Why not publish 1,000 newsletters? This is newsletter #107.
Where will time take me? Where will my dreams take me? Where will my actions towards these dreams take me?
So as I’ve shared this quote of mine before, I shall share it again, as it really is becoming a way of life.
“A life in education… is an education in life.”
My summer promise is that these newsletters will yet again be sent to you on a weekly basis. Let’s get back to the Sunday night deadline, with the option of turning it in earlier in the week.
But as always. The first time back is always the hardest.
Thank you for your support!
Cheers to lifelong learning,
