Hey everyone - Adam here.
This week I am going to present a list of updates relating to my involvement with Web3 thingsā¦.
Whatās Web3?
Letās visit a quote from a piece I wrote in June 2020 (Web2 Pessimism and Web3 Optimism) explaining what Web3 is.
Web3 is based upon the idea that the new internet will be built so that it empowers individuals to rightfully own and be compensated for their time and data. This is a revolution in comparison to the internetās previous way of operating, as centralized repositories (such as Google) currently own and profit from the data we create as users.
Now tell me what is a Web3J?
Just as a DJ, a Web3J is someone who curates their āpersonal favoritesā as well as ācrowd pleasersā i.e., the good ones from the not-so-good ones.
A Web3J is an individual who strives to decipher the signal from noise in the space of web3/cryptocurrencies.
A Web3J is an individual who collaborates with active experimenters building in web3 and finds way to create more āpositive-sumā games together.
Here is a look at some of my active experimentation happening in Web3 as I take strides in becoming a better Web3J.
MUSIC NFTs
There is a running joke in the crypto space, where at times, people will simply tweet āmusic NFTā and their engagement blows up.
The time came and I threw out the crypto/web3 bat signal on Twitter signifying that I want to mint a music NFT before Labor Day.
I was thrilled to receive some responses from various friends, detailing possible explorations, and have opened up opportunities for new collaborations.
Being so intertwined with Web3 focused communities such as FWB (Friends with Benefits), I figured itās about time I try to do something as a producer in the crypto space rather than merely operating as a consumer.
Whatās a music NFT?
Letās start by defining what an NFT is. NFT stands for non-fungible token.
āWhen something is non-fungible this means it is uniqueā¦ i.e, it has a limited supply.ā from (DAO Excitement) published July 22nd, 2021.
So what about music NFTs?
The type of NFT I am looking to do is a 1:1 NFT. This is what can be considered an original internet master of a given song minted by its creator.
What this means, is that Iāll be selling a 1/1 copy of one of my original tracks.
As an artist I will have to go through the process of āmintingā this token of my song to signify that I committed this transaction. Think of this as a digital signature of mine verifying that this is the only way one can have an NFT of my song.
Itās an interesting experiment and I felt it is time for me to give it a shot, creating an additional source of income as an artist. As Iām realizing that so much of an Artists income is generated from touring. A consistent number I have often heard is 80% of an artists income.
By all means, Iām fine with pursuing this route of touring as a source of income as I begin to get booked for various gigsā¦ I do however value my self-care routine and always want to be sure that Iām taking the required time to do so.
Speaking of gigsā¦
FWB FEST
The lineup has been announced for FWB Fest publicly!
It is a thrill to see the name BARTYDARTY listed under the āCommunityā section on the FWB Fest lineup.
What even is FWB Fest?
FWB FEST is an immersive conference and festival experience at the intersection of culture and Web3, curated and produced by the FWB community. The full weekend of sonic and emergent frequencies takes place August 12-14 in Idyllwild, California at the Idyllwild Arts Academy, a 100-acre private campus.
From speaker sessions, workshops, and discussions at day to an all inclusive culinary and beverage program, musical performances and DJ sets at night, it's yours to immerse yourself in from sunup to sundown.
This is my first chance to travel to California and I am stoked to do so as BARTYDARTY.
I have continued to double-down and have a ton of fun DJING and making music, and figure itās time to show what this name means to my best ability.
ONE BOOK RECOMMENDATION
This week I have been reading my first-ever book in Kindle form.. all from an iPhone. Iāve been reading the newly published book āThe Network Stateā by Balaji Srinivassan.
Here is a brief description as to the ideas that are presented in The Network State.
Technology has enabled us to start new companies, new communities, and new currencies. But can we use it to start new cities, or even new countries? This book explains how to build the successor to the nation state, a concept we call the network state. - The Network State website.
You ought to check out the website https://thenetworkstate.com/ as Balaji and his team did an excellent job in creating a fun way to interact with the text as not only an E-book but also an open-source project.
90 pages through this and I am seriously considering starting a book club for this. Potentially paired with a shared knowledge graph via Roam Research to do some sensemaking around this.
Stay tuned!
PARTING NOTE
So over the course of the summer I plan on releasing my first music NFT, perform at FWB Fest, as well as read The Network State.
All of this is doubling-down on my convictions that Web3 is here to stay, as the future of the internet continues to decentralize. Away from mega-platforms and developing stronger ānetworked localitiesā.
Listen to BARTYDARTY VOLUME 10 as you start your weekend if you havenāt already.
Okay back to touching grass šæ
Cheers to lifelong learning,
Adam Bartley aka BARTYDARTY.
